Training Report - Mt.Tokachidake (Mt.Tokachi) 30

K participated in this training. It was minus 26 degrees Celsius at the KTV (katabatic valley) and minus 18 degrees Celsius at the Mt.Tokachidake Hot Springs. The travelled distance was 23km.

There was no radiative cooling. Therefore, the temprature wasn't low at the foot of the mountain but it was enough low on the mountains. But this time, as the teperrature wasn't super low, he wore disposable hot packs on the instep only. However, it was a mistake. The temperature didn't go up even at the hour where he was commencing to descend. The batteries of cameras shutted down due to low voltage caused by the cold. He should have brought hot packs to warm the batteies.

He wears anti-fog band (cf. Mt.Tokachidake 29) this time as well. However, because of fair wind, the glasses are fogged a little. The temparature is enough low. The inside of mouth freezes but with facecover, he can tolerate the cold of this morning. He heard the sound of frost crack four times. The road surface state is good for the whole itinerary from the foot to the summit.

The content of the bottle is completely frozen at the altitude of 900m. But he almost finished drinking it up to this altitude.

The hard rime begins at the entrance of the KTV (katabatic valley). The wind direction is 180 degrees different in the valley. Cold wind which might be the katabatic wind is descending the valley. It's too cold that he raises the face cover. Even with raised face cover, the glasses do not freeze thanks to the anti-fog band, head wind and careful expiration.

Quitting the KTV, the wind direction returns to the original direction.

At the summit, he met some foreign skiers who speak English. He talked with them for a while and began to descent.

The temperature isn't going up even at the hour where he's commencing to descend.

The road surface state isn't superbe. But it's ok.

After passing the bifurcation, the road surface condition became better. HHowever, it snowed considerably after the hour of climbing. So he didn't speed descending prudently. The maximal velocity was only 50km/h. He passed two cars before reaching the foot of the mountain.
