Training Report - Bogakudai

K participated in this training after the training Mt.Tokachidake 18. It was minus 21 degrees Celsius (estimated minimum temperature during the training is minus 30 degrees Celsius) at Bogakudai.

When he began the training, the temperature was minus 14 degrees Celsius at Bogakudai. He started at Bogakudai and rode in the direction of Shirogane Hot Springs.

The Mt.Bieifuji and the Mt.Bieidake (Mt.Biei) is beautiful.

Just after beginning the climb, suddenly he felt the temperature had gone down considerably. The surface of his face experiences tickling sensation because the face surface freezes instantaneously exposing to the outside low temperature. He has never felt such a strong tickling sensation on the climb (in the downhill, he has experienced such a sensation because of the wind-chill). Moreover, his pharynx began to experience tickliing sensation when he inhales the air. Even during the training Mt.Tokachidake 4 in a super low temperature condition, he didn't experience the tickling sensation to the pharynx. Such a sensation was limited to the tongue. He remarked his bike was covered with the rime. It's like the film "The Day after Tomorrow".

The voltage of the camera's battery went down considerably because of this cold. Some of modes which need a high voltage shutted down. So we can't bring enough pictures anymore. Struggling with the camera, we managed to take few picutures.

The direct route to Fukiage Hot Springs and the Mt.Tokachidake Hot Springs is closed during the winter.

Headding for Bogakudai. Because of the super cold, one of two tail lamps is malfunctioning. He can't switch to several modes. When he tries to switch, it goes off.

This super low temperature lasted just for 10 or 15 minutes. In the automated observed temperature data of Shibinai, not far from here, just at the same time, temperature fall of 5 degrees during 50 minutes was registered. In the automated observed temperature date of Rokugo, also not far from here, just at the same time, temperature fall of 3 degrees during only 10 minutes was registered. According to this data, the temperature at that moment was minus 25 degrees Celsius. However, K told afterward he had felt much colder than Mt.Tokachidake 21 where the temperature was minus 27 degrees Celsius although we had more sunlight. It means the temperature was lower than minus 27 degrees Celsius. We imagine it was around minus 30 degrees Celsius. According to data of several observation points, this tendency of temperature decrease was more pronounced in the mountains. So here the temperature might have decreased more than two observation points. But we don't have data which supports this fact of minus 30 degrees as we don't measure the temperature all the time.

After those 10 or 15 minutes, the temperature rose. When K arrived to Bogakudai, it was minus 21 degrees Celsius.
